How the pigpen cipher works

Pigpen writes each letter as the piece of a grid around it. The letters A to I sit in a tic-tac-toe grid, J to R in a second grid with a dot in each space, S to V in an X shape, and W to Z in a second X with dots. The shape of the lines around a letter, plus the dot or no dot, is its symbol.

It is sometimes called the Freemason's cipher, since Freemasons used it in the 1700s. It is one of the most common symbol ciphers in puzzle caches. Tap each symbol you see to build the message. If a puzzle uses a different letter layout, the shapes will not match, so check the grid on the cache page.
